Stair Rod FAQ’s

How do I install Stair Rods (Hinged and Unhinged)?

Fitting your stair rods can be a relatively straightforward process but, should you have any concerns, please do seek the assistance of a qualified contractor/tradesperson. The width of each step may vary slightly, especially with older properties, so we recommend measuring each one before cutting the entire batch of stair rods to a single size.

  • Starting at the bottom of the staircase, place a bracket either side of the carpet runner. We generally place the brackets ¾ -1 inch away from the runner, but this can be adjusted depending on personal preference. Fix the bracket in place using the top screw. Please note, this fitting will be concealed when using hinged brackets.
  • When using unhinged brackets, the rod must be in place when fixing the brackets into position. Once in position, the bottom screw can be applied.
  • When using hinged brackets you can fix the brackets in place and then position the stair rod in the centre of the openings.
  • Once happy with the alignment, taking care to leave an equal amount of rod and finial at either end, close the hinged section ensuring the rubber non-slip pads are in position. Lock the bracket closed using either a pan head or a release screw.

Continue this process for each step.

Fitting Stair Rods Over a Carpet

  • Once your carpet is fitted, locate the centre of the staircase steps. Place a stair rod over the centre, starting at the bottom step.
  • With the stair rod in place, position a bracket at either end at an equal distance from the final.
  • Screw the brackets into the back of the step. Replicate the position of the brackets for the remaining steps.

Please note, when installing over the carpet, using the correct diameter of the rod is especially important to ensure the bracket and rod is not lost within the carpet pile. We recommend trying a sample set first, just to ensure you achieve the finished look that you

Should I use hinged or unhinged brackets?

The main advantage of hinged stair rod brackets is that they feature a non-slip pad to help prevent your stair rod moving during staircase use. In addition, using the hinged release screw, the stair rod can be easily removed without having to remove the brackets, making it much easier to clean and vacuum your stairs when required.

What size stair rods do I need?

When choosing the size of the stair rods you require we recommend you leave an overhang of 6.5cm each side of the carpet runner. However, this is only a suggestion and the length of the overhang will ultimately come down to personal aesthetic preference.

Do I need lacquered or non-lacquered stair rods?

Generally, for domestic purposes, lacquered brass fittings are used. As the raw polished brass surface is protected from grease, dust and moisture in the air, you tend to find they remain shiny, only requiring a light dusting from time to time. In the case of unlacquered fittings, the brass will require regular polishing and cleaning but, once cleaned, will offer an unpatrolled colouration and shine.
